McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
With almost the same personnel as Joe Henderson’s extraordinary 'Inner Urge' album, McCoy Tyner’s 'The Real McCoy' ranks with the great pianist’s very best work as a leader. Recorded in 1967, nearly two years after leaving the magnificent Classic Quartet of John Coltrane, Tyner is joined here by his fellow Quartet member, the astonishing Elvin Jones, along with Henderson and Ron Carter.
The set of five excellent Tyner pieces includes two of his best-known, 'Passion Dance' and 'Blues on the Corner.' The music is deep in the post-Coltrane style – exploratory, intense, passionate and urgent – and everybody is in top form, with Henderson at his peak during this era.
