Pronunciation Please of "Desdemona" fitzwilliams
Wed Apr 17 2002 22:41
Just a quick query.

What is the correct pronunciation for Desdemona, (Verdi's Otello)?

I've heard;
Des-day-mona, stressing "day"
Des-day-mona, stressing "mona"
Des-duh-mona, stressing "duh"

Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The nearest pronunciation is Des-DAY-mona without the "Y". Another option: Des-THE-mona - the correct vowel sound is "/e/" from "THE" and the correct consonant is "/d/" from DAY.
