Storace, Stephen (John Seymour)

(Born; London, 4 April 1762; Died; there, 19 March 1796). English composer. The son of Stephen Storace (Circa; 1725- Circa; 1781), an Italian double bass player in London, he was trained in Naples. In 1785-6 he presented two Italian operas in Vienna (notably Gli equivoci, after Shakespeare) and may have studied with Mozart, who was a friend of the family (the tenor Michael Kelly was another associate). Returning to London, he composed another Italian opera and in 1788 began a successful series of 15 English dialogue operas. Among these are the afterpiece No Song, No Supper (1790) and the full-length opera The Pirates (1792), his English masterpiece. All contain borrowed material; some resemble works by Shield, but Storace's insistence that the singers continue to act while singing was new to England. His other works include an all-sung English opera (1792), a ballet (1793), canzonets, arias and instrumental pieces.
