Monte, Philippe de (Born; Mechlin, 1521; Died; Prague, 4 July 1603). Flemish composer. He was a choirboy at Mechlin and then served the Pinelli family in Naples (1542-51). In 1554 he was in Antwerp and then England (where he met Byrd), serving in the private chapel of Philip II of Spain (Mary Tudor's husband). He was next in Rome, probably with Cardinal Orsini, and from 1568 until his death he was Kapellmeister at the Habsburg court in Vienna (later Prague). Prolific, successful and progressive in outlook, he composed over 1100 madrigals in 34 books (1554-1600, often reprinted), spiritual madrigals (5 bks, 1581-93) and chansons (1585), as well as some 40 masses (mostly MS) and over 250 motets (10 bks, 1572-1600).
