Boston Chamber Music Society
Biography
Originally performing a three-concert series, the Boston Chamber Music Society has grown to become recognized as the preeminent chamber music ensemble of New England. This achievement is largely due to the efforts of its visionary founders: Ronald Thomas, noted cellist and Artistic Director, and Bruce Coppock, founding Executive Director. Their mission remains the BCMS mission toady: to provide Boston's concert-going public with exceptional performances of the great chamber music repertoire of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries while fostering understanding and appreciation of the artform, making it more accessible to all. Their immediate success was supported by Haim S. Eliachar, who developed a Board of Trustees and was the founding Chairman.
The Society is distinguished in Boston's musically fertile region for its enduring performance standards: the members' ensemble playing demonstrates the perfected combination of control and freedom which comes from years of collegial collaboration. While each member is a celebrated soloist with national and international stature, BCMS musicians remain loyal to the group and come together in varied combinations to form ensembles distinguished for their blend of refinement, subtlety, and sheer energy. Guest artists are chosen by Artistic Director Thomas for their particular affinity for, and mastery of, the works they will play.
The Boston Chamber Music Society has released six compact discs to critical acclaim, and collaborated with other ensembles, among them the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Spoleto Festival, the Muir Quartet, and the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. In August 2000, the Society held its Third August Music Series at the Longly School in Cambridge, which was received enthusiastically by concert-goers and critics alike.
The Society tours nationally and internationally, including Japan, France, Italy, and throughout the United States. Details of their upcoming tour schedule can be found on their website at www.bostonchambermusic.org
