Amanda Roocroft

Soon after graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music, British born Amanda Roocroft shot to fame at her operatic debut singing Sophie in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier with the Welsh National Opera in 1990 at the age of just 24. She was highly praised for her technical brilliance and artistic grasp of the special Viennese style in one of the most famous and demanding roles in the operatic repertoire. Her auspicious appearances launched her career as a highly sought after international artist.

Since her debut Amanda Roocroft has been greatly in demand at the world’s top opera houses where she has enjoyed great successes as an especially lyrical soprano and highly sensitive actress. With the Royal Opera she has been particularly acclaimed for her performances in Mozart operas, notably Pamina in the Magic Flute and Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. Also at Covent Garden she made a strong impression in the very different role of Mimi in La Bohème, capturing not only her vulnerability but also her less obvious capriciousness. She has formed a close association with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich where she has sung roles as diverse as Fiordiligi, Amelia in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello, and the Countess in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro. Her particularly strong reputation as a Mozart singer has brought her further special successes at the Glyndebourne Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera, where she has performed the role of Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. She has also sung the very technically demanding roles of Cleopatra and Ginevra in Handel’s operas Julius Caesar (with the Royal Opera) and Ariodante (with the English National Opera). Most recently she has had a spectacular success taking the lead role in Janácek’s Katya Kabanova at Glyndebourne, in which she was acclaimed by audience and press alike for her virtuosity, intensity and drama in this new departure in her repertoire.

Amanda Roocroft has a very busy and diverse concert life and has enjoyed particularly successful appearances at the BBC Promenade Concerts and the Edinburgh Festival. Amanda Roocroft’s artistry and musicianship have appealed to many of the very finest conductors of our time. She has performed with Andrew Davis, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Neville Marriner, Lord Menuhin, and Sir Simon Rattle. With John Eliot Gardiner she has recorded the role of Fiordiligi on compact disc and video for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv, and with Bernard Haitink she has recorded the solo soprano part in Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony for EMI.
