Global Music Network launches GMN.COM
‘Listen, Experience, Learn’ February 1, 1999 - Global Music Network today launched GMN.COM, a comprehensive website for classical and jazz music. GMN.COM features a vast amount of classical music available for free listening, as well as video interviews of artists, and a searchable Groves Concise Dictionary of Music. Global Music Network stands out from other music websites because of the unique relationships it has cultivated with artists, venues and record labels. 'GMN has created, acquired, or licensed exclusive content with the full rights to provide a comprehensive multimedia musical experience to both classical and jazz lovers and novices' says Michael Lubin, CEO and co-founder of GMN.

‘The Future of Music’ After only two months on the Internet, GMN.COM has already been referred to as ‘The future of music’ in a full page article in the Daily Telegraph by Norman Lebrecht (copy enclosed). Lebrecht describes the GMN.COM launch as 'a historic turning point in the distribution and reception of music, a point from which there will be no return.' 'The idea was to create a site that lets users experience music and the creative process in a new way' explains Lubin, 'giving them a glimpse into the best and most interesting, with freedom of choice. We want to create a community, with our artists serving as trusted navigators for our users within the musical world. Our business model shows strong contributions from corporate sponsors and advertisements, as well as from the sale of standard and custom-made compact discs that cannot be obtained anywhere else.' The result is clearly successful. Within the past two months, GMN has been featured by both BBC Music Magazine and Heat Magazine as a top music website. The feedback from users is impressive as well; one Brazilian user writes, 'I really cannot find the right words! You are doing a great job for classical music and its fans. The site is terrific, stimulating, beautiful...I could go on a very large list of this kind! …For the moment I will only ask: please, keep up this wonderful enterprise!' 'In market where many companies take advantage of legal ambiguities surrounding the Internet, the GMN philosophy is different,' remarks David Atherton, conductor of the Hong Kong Philarmonic and GMN president and co-foudner. ' We are working with the record labels and the musician unions in order to obtain the various Internet rights for music; we are on the forefront of Internet law.' Lebrecht adds, 'Remarkably, the Musicians Union in Britain and others elsewhere have waived rule-book restraints on unpaid use of their members' work. Even more exceptionally, some record labels have allowed their closely-guarded exclusive artists to appear in recordable performances on GMN. Both sectors seem to believe that cyber-sampling will attract new concert-goers and CD buyers.'

GMN believes that this 'future of music' is imminent, given advances in PCs, entertainment systems, wideband Internet access and rights laws. The future of music will be delivered online, with the guidance of respected musicians who educate, recommend, and mentor. Users will be able to listen to music that they choose, design custom compact discs, and place their order online for mail delivery or download. 'GMN is leading the way by assembling all the elements necessary for such a convergence which will transform the music industry in the next few years.' Says Lubin. GMN is expanding to provide even more services, including jazz music and videos, Internet radio, interaction with artists via discussion groups, custom CD creation and download, and music news. Additionally, there are current negotiations with major content sources, which will establish GMN as one of the most comprehensive providers of classical music.
