Josť Carreras has been honoured at a special ceremony in London for his outstanding work singing the roles of Giuseppe Verdi.
The acclaimed tenor and GMN Family Artist was presented with the Gold Medal of the Amici di Verdi Society in the centenary anniversary year of the composer's death. The award was made in recognition of the Verdi tenor roles Mr Carreras has performed throughout his career.
The presentation, by the former General Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Sir John Tooley, followed a wide and varied conversation with Mr Carreras including how his career began, working with Herbert von Karajan, and Carreras's thoughts on surtitles.
He also discussed his Leukaemia and its treatment, and the very moment when he realised his singing voice had survived.
The whole evening was captured on film by GMN and will be shown in a forthcoming special exclusive feature on our opera channel.
