Linder Sextet at Jazz Gallery
The inauguration of "The Jazz Gallery¹s Composers Series" began on February 23rd with the Jason Lindner Quintet performing Mr. Lindner¹s new compositions. The Quintet featured Jason Lindner-piano, Mark Turner-tenor saxophone, Miguel Zenon-alto saxophone, Larry Grenadier-bass, and Jeff Ballard-drums. The group was augmented on some pieces by Todd Low, playing Chinese snake violin.

The Jazz Gallery's Composers Series is a direct outgrowth of the Gallery's ongoing programming in fulfillment of its mission to further public appreciation of jazz as a vital and vigorous art form. The Gallery promotes a view of jazz that recognizes it as an emerging international language wherein a vast lexicon of musical items from around the world finds an artful syntax in which to be expressed.

The Composers Series brings together, in a creatively dynamic context, individual artists whose growth and development it has long been the Gallery's role to enhance. Over the course of this year‹in addition to Mr. Lindner‹ the Gallery will premiere new works by James Hurt, Vijay Iyer, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Jason Moran and Dafnis Prieto. Additional collaborations among these individual composers will be presented in the coming Fall season under the supervision of Henry Threadgill.

As a developing writer and performer, Jason Lindner¹s primary role models were Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell. He was especially fond of the surprising turns that Monk introduced into his compositions and of the emotive power that Powell brought to his own work. He has subsequently found influences from an array of sources stretching from classic "Tin Pan Alley" composers to the deep textures of Afro-Cuban music

For more than five years Mr. Lindner led a 12-piece ensemble in weekly appearances at the Greenwich Village jazz club, Small's, playing many tunes that he had composed and arranged for his band. During this time, he became widely recognized as one of the most innovative big band writers currently at work in the jazz world. Subsequently he led the same group in multiple appearances at The Jazz Gallery and has gone on to appear here as the leader of various quintets and sextets, as a side-person with Claudia Acuña and as a collaborator with James Hurt. Now, in the context of the Composers Series, full attention is brought to bear on his stature as a prolific composer.

The Jazz Gallery gratefully acknowledges support from the New York State Council on the Arts, Presenting Program, and the Department of Cultural Affairs on New York City.
