International Handel Festival, Göttingen , 6–21 May 2002

The 82-year old Handel Festival in Göttingen, Germany, situated in an idyllic and unspoilt university town in Lower Saxony, fell firmly under the international limelight last year when it presented the official modern world-premiere performance of Handel’s recently discovered Gloria. For all the sensation and attention that particular event attracted, this week-long celebration of the music of Handel and his contemporaries has long been a favourite destination of the world’s leading artists and enthusiasts alike. Internationally renowned baroque and classical specialist Nicholas McGegan, Artistic Director of the Festival since 1990, once again leads this year’s line up, which includes Handel’s opera Alcina with star Australian soprano Yvonne Kenny in the title role; the great and seldom-performed oratorio Athalia, with soloists Elisabeth Scholl, Deborah York and Daniel Taylor; and the New York Baroque Dance Company recreating courtly dances and original 17th- and 18th century choreographies. San Francisco-based Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra returns as the resident ensemble, and the extensive schedule of events is filled with chamber and open-air concerts, art exhibits and museum tours. Details of this year’s International Handel Festival, Göttingen can be found at www.haendel.org.

Killaloe Festival, Ireland, 17–22 July 2002

The Irish Chamber Orchestra play host to the 7th annual Killaloe Festival located on the rolling green banks of the Shannon, arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth. Historic St. Flannan’s Cathedral is the backdrop for the season’s concerts given by the ICO and a distinguished line-up of internationally renowned artists, this year including pianist Stephen Kovacevich.

A special commission brings together music by Irish composers Ian Wilson, Raymond Deane, Gerald Barry, Elaine Agnew and Fergus Johnston. A host of chamber music and a healthy dose of good old-fashioned Irish charm and hospitality round out the week’s events.

Violinist Fionnuala Hunt presides over the festivities for her final season as Artistic Director, passing the baton to Nicholas McGegan who makes a cameo appearance conducting the ICO, and who assumes the title of Music Director of the ICO and the Killaloe Festival in the 2002-03 season.
