Vienna Festival 2002 program announced
Vienna’s annual festival of the arts has announced a wide, varied and fascinating program of concerts, plays and other artistic events that will entertain over 75,000 people in the Austrian capital.

The ‘Wiener Festwochen’ opening on the 10 May lasts for some five weeks and will showcase almost 40 productions from 14 countries and over 150 performances.

The range of opera and classical concerts brings some of the brightest of stars to the home of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Mozart’s three great operas to librettos by Lorenzo da Ponte – Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni will play in the historic Theater an der Wien marking the climax and final point of a long-term Mozart-da Ponte collaboration between the Vienna Festival and the Vienna State opera. Conducting Viennese forces will be Riccardo Muti.

Other operatic highlights include, Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria in a critically acclaimed production which brought together conductor William Christie, Director Adrian Noble, the Académie européene de Musique from Aix-en-Provence and Christie’s renowned performing group, Les Arts Florissants. Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw sees the young British conductor Daniel Harding conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a production directed by Luc Bondy, the Wiener Festwochen’s Artistic Director. Contemporary opera and music drama is well represented with works by Peter Eötvös and Steve Reich.

A festival in Vienna would be hardly complete without a spectacular concert series at the renowned Musikverein concert hall. Claudio Abbado, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Simon Rattle, Jordi Savall will appear conducting the most illustrious orchestras around – the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, Concentus Musicus Wien, Les Arts Flosrissants and Le Concert des Nations will all take part. The Festival Concerts will also include appearances by some of the finest exponents of the art of singing: Cecilia Bartoli, Agnes Baltsa, Waltraud Meier, Ben Heppner and Thomas Quasthoff.
